Sharp rise in air pollution this year: BMC

After a year of partial respite from rising air pollution during last year, the city has seen a sharp rise in the level of air pollutants this year.

Extensive public and private construction and other related activities have led to a a rise in the level air pollution, according to the Environment Status Report (2011-12) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The report also shows that levels of toxic pollutants like sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) and ammonia (NH3) have increased drastically in all six BMC monitoring sites.

An alarming increase has been recorded in the levels of carcinogenic compound such as benzopyrene which can cause cancer and other respiratory and genetic disorders. While the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) standard for benzopyrene is 1 ng/m3, the BMC’s Marawali monitoring centre at Chembur recorded a high level of benzopyrene at 1.2 ng/m3 and it was 0.9 ng/m3 in Bhandup.

Interestingly, the air pollution standards index (PSI) shows that pollution levels rise after the monsoon and peak in December.
