SHANGHAI is still breathing foul air today as the smog continues to prevail over the whole city even though a sunny and cloudy weather has arrived and will last through Sunday.

The city’s air quality index (AQI) reached 212 by 11am. The figure is in the range of “heavy pollution,” the second highest on a six-level air pollution scale, according to the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center.

Air pollutants brought in by a cold front from north China lowered the city’s air quality, the center said.

The smog is unlikely to disperse in the coming three to four days as the local weather conditions remain stable, weather forecasters said.
