Code Orange air pollution alert issued for Friday in New Jersey

NewJerseyA Code Orange air quality alert was issued for Friday for Hunterdon and all the other counties in New Jersey.

It means that that air pollution concentrations in the region may reach the “unhealthy” level for certain groups of people, according to the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Sensitive groups include children, people suffering from asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases, and the elderly.

“The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors,” DEP said. For more information, visit airnow.gov.

The bad air is in part because of the heat wave, the first of the season, which started today. High temperatures are forecast to be around 92 in the Flemington area Friday, but the humidity will result in heat indexes making it feel warmer, the National Weather Service said;

It’s expected that Friday will have the hottest temperatures of the heat wave; current forecasts are for highs to only peak at around 89 on Saturday and 87 on Sunday, when there will be clouds around and a chance of showers and thunderstorms.
