Air quality worsens, Missoula Valley sees influx of smoke

Montana’s air quality is continuing to deteriorate in some areas, with both the Bitterroot and Gallatin Valleys reporting unhealthy conditions Thursday because of fire smoke.

Missoula, Frenchtown, Great Falls, Billings and Helena have had varied air quality throughout the day. Missoula has ranged from “good” to, most recently, “unhealthy to sensitive groups,” according to a county press release issued late Thursday afternoon.

While much of the state has experienced varied air quality because of the fires in the region, the brunt of the pollution continues to plague the Bitterroot and southwest Montana. Most of that smoke in the west has been pouring out of Idaho. But additional Montana fires are also contributing to the problem.

Sharp rise in air pollution this year: BMC

After a year of partial respite from rising air pollution during last year, the city has seen a sharp rise in the level of air pollutants this year.

Extensive public and private construction and other related activities have led to a a rise in the level air pollution, according to the Environment Status Report (2011-12) of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The report also shows that levels of toxic pollutants like sulphur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and suspended particulate matter (SPM) and ammonia (NH3) have increased drastically in all six BMC monitoring sites.

An alarming increase has been recorded in the levels of carcinogenic compound such as benzopyrene which can cause cancer and other respiratory and genetic disorders. While the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) standard for benzopyrene is 1 ng/m3, the BMC’s Marawali monitoring centre at Chembur recorded a high level of benzopyrene at 1.2 ng/m3 and it was 0.9 ng/m3 in Bhandup.

Interestingly, the air pollution standards index (PSI) shows that pollution levels rise after the monsoon and peak in December.

Air Quality In Central, Southern Oregon Suffering As Wildfires Burn

Smoke from wildfires is continuing to cause poor air quality in parts of Southern and Central Oregon.

According to the state Department of Environmental Quality, there’s enough smoke in the air in Klamath Falls to be considered unhealthy. In Enterprise, Lakeview, and Prineville the DEQ’s Air Quality Index ranks pollution levels as “moderate”.

William Knight is a spokesman for the DEQ. He’s urging people to stay indoors when it’s smoky outside.

He says wildfire smoke is known to contain a host of cancer-causing agents that that can become lodged deep in the lungs if inhaled.

Camden air pollution sign raises awareness

More Camden residents are inquiring about air quality following the installation of London’s first real time air pollution sign, according to Camden council.

In June 2012, the council installed the LED sign on the outside wall of its offices on Euston road.

Funded by Defra, the poster-sized sign displays live air quality messages to drivers, cyclists and pedestrians on what is one of the most polluted roads in the capital.

Messages are triggered by hourly measurements of two key pollutants in Camden; nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter. If the concentrations of these pollutants are low according to the Government’s UK Daily Air Quality Index, the sign will display a range of sustainable transport and health messages. When concentrations of pollutants are moderate or high, the messages will change to warn of elevated air pollution and its impact on pedestrians and cyclists.

Asthma is on the rise in some Top of Utah communities

Asthma is on the rise in Utah and it’s affecting some areas of the state more than others. The Utah Department of Health released The Asthma in Utah Burden Report 2012 this week. It shows that the number of people with asthma has increased significantly since 2001, despite improvements in outdoor air quality and a decrease in cigarette smoking and secondhand smoke exposure.

Asthma is a chronic lung disease that can make it hard to breathe. Symptoms include breathlessness, coughing, wheezing and chest tightness.
