How birds are used to monitor pollution

pigeons

Common nesting birds may provide a convenient way to track environmental clean-up efforts.

Nesting birds that feed on insects that hatch in lake or stream-bed sediments may make good biomonitors for pollution, says Thomas Custer of the US Geological Survey’s Upper Midwest Environmental Sciences Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin. That’s because any contamination in the sediment will make its way into the birds and into their eggs and young.

…

In a pilot study involving birds purchased from hobbyists in China, the Philippines and the United States, Halbrook found stunning health-related differences that were apparently related to air quality. In Beijing and Manilla, for example, he found black lungs and enlarged testes. In one case, a testicle was so huge it was one-fifth the weight of the entire bird. But in less polluted cities elsewhere in China and in the United States, the birds’ organs were much healthier.

Plus, the lungs and livers from the birds from Beijing contained three or four times more polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, common by-products of fossil-fuel burning, than did those from areas with better air quality. “This suggests that other species, including humans, may also have adverse effects” from these environmental contaminants, he says.

FAQ: What filters do I need for the X-treme™ masks?

What filters do I need for the X-treme™ masks?

Essentially the filters in the X-treme™ function in the same way as the City™ and Sportsta™ filters do. The X-treme™ mask for sports utilises the particulate filtration ability of the Sportsta™ and the X-treme™ mask for urban use, uses activated carbon as its filtration medium.

Shanghai updates air pollution gauge

The Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau rolled out a new index for measuring air quality Friday that recognizes three types of air pollution left out of the previous monitoring system.

The launch of the Air Quality Index (AQI) will result in more days when the air is reported to be polluted and could lead to an improvement in local air quality by helping environmental authorities better trace the sources of pollution.

Shanghai, along with 24 cities in Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces, began publishing the AQI as part of pilot program to comply with a new national standard on air pollution reporting, the Shanghai Environmental Protection Bureau said in a press release Thursday. The Ministry of Environmental Protection has ordered local governments to comply with the new standard before 2016.

‘Older cars damaging attempt to reduce air pollution level in city’

RECESSION and older cars on the roads are helping to prevent air pollution levels in Nottingham from falling enough to meet legal standards, it is claimed.

Although the EU has given the city until January 2015 to reduce nitrogen dioxide levels to legal limits, officials fear that the targets may not be reached in time. The city could be fined if that is the case.

Canning Circus, Upper Parliament Street, Shakespeare Street and Queen’s Road have been highlighted as the city’s most polluted roads.

Richard Taylor, noise and pollution control team leader at Nottingham City Council, said air pollution levels across the country were not falling as fast as expected because the Government had overestimated the take-up of cleaner vehicles such as electric cars.

Recession was also having an impact because it meant fewer motorists could afford to buy newer vehicles with less polluting engines.

“A lot of people are not able to change their vehicles as regularly as they were doing in the past,” said Mr Taylor. “People are not buying electric vehicles as expected and more people are driving vehicles with diesel engines, which emit more NO2 than petrol engines.”

Air pollution ‘ages the brain’ a study suggests

Researchers found that elderly people did worse on thinking tests if they lived in areas with high levels of air pollution, compared to those in areas with relatively clean air.

The team from University of southern California presented their findings at the Gerontological Society of America’s annual scientific meeting, in San Diego.

Postgraduate doctoral fellow Jennifer Ailshire conducted the analysis using data from the American Environmental Protection Agency and the Health and Retirement Study.

She said: “As a result of age-related declines in health and functioning, older adults are particularly vulnerable to the hazards of exposure to unhealthy air.

“Air pollution has been linked to increased cardiovascular and respiratory problems, and even premature death, in older populations, and there is emerging evidence that exposure to particulate air pollution may have adverse effects on brain health and functioning as well.”

Road signs to be rolled out to cut air pollution

NEW road signs in Swansea are set to help motorists do their bit to lower pollution levels.

Electronic signs have been popping up on the outskirts of the city centre and now Swansea Council has announced it is set to launch the Swansea Nowcaster air pollution monitoring system in early 2013.

The system will involve a series of signs linked to 47 traffic counters and air monitoring equipment installed in certain parts of the city.

The council has already installed three of the signs along Oystermouth Road and Quay Parade.

A further three will be installed in and around the Hafod area and have been funded from the Welsh Government’s Tranquil, Greener and Cleaner Places programme.

The signage will respond to predictions of raised levels of air pollution and will aim to redirect motorists along routes away from the areas concerned.

Parts of Swansea, including Hafod, are included within the Swansea Air Quality Management Area 2010.

South Downs village air quality report made available to public

A report on proposals for action to improve air quality in Storrington village is being made available for public consultation.

The Storrington Air Quality Action Plan report is now available to view through Horsham District Council’s website (www.horsham.gov.uk).

The draft Action Plan has been prepared by the Storrington air quality steering group, which comprises officers and Members of Horsham District Council, West Sussex County Council and representatives from Storrington Parish Council.

It has been prepared as a requirement of the Air Quality Management process, as defined by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

The details of some of the specific measures to be implemented are yet to be agreed, pending the outcome of a traffic management feasibility study and feedback from the public consultation.

The Storrington Air Quality Management Area (AQMA) and the draft Action Plan has not been developed in response to any specific planning application but instead is part of the much wider, ongoing commitment to the Government’s statutory Local Air Quality Management process.

All local authorities are required to review and assess air quality on a regular basis and identify areas that fail to meet the statutory air quality objectives.

Paris could ban old bangers in pollution crackdown

Vehicles produced before 1997 could be banned from Paris under plans to reduce air pollution in the French capital.

French classics like the Citroen DS and 2CV wouldn’t be allowed inside the A86 autoroute, the equivalent of London’s M25, if proposals talked up by Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe came into effect.

“This is for our citizens,” said Monsieur Delanoe. “It’s a public health battle and we’ve been fighting since 2001 to try and make the air here more breathable.”

The rule, which could be in place by 2014, would also forbid trucks and buses built before 1996 and motorcycles produced as recently as 2001 from entering the city.

Around 365,000 cars would be affected, the Paris Town Hall estimates.
