Air quality warnings persist in Fairbanks North Pole

Air quality warnings have accompanied a stretch of cold weather this week, but those advisories won’t necessarily count against a federal mandate to limit local pollution levels.

Borough air quality technician Jim McCormick said early Wednesday afternoon that air quality warnings are expected to last at least through Friday evening this week, with fine-particulate pollution levels classified as “unhealthy” in North Pole and “unhealthy for sensitive groups” in Fairbanks.

At 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the borough issued an updated advisory describing the air as “unhealthy” in both areas.

Air pollution study must factor in bushfire smoke

A STUDY of Perth’s air quality by interstate universities to help predict future pollution levels has determined the accuracy of forecast models for the region would be low due to diffuse sources of bushfire smoke.

Researchers from the Universities of Wollongong and Tasmania investigated the relationship between daily pollution levels and the daily spatial pattern of hotspot (fire) activity in the landscapes surrounding Perth and Sydney.

The researchers used daily thermal anomalies detected by the orbital MODIS system as well as pollution concentrations and meteorological data from 2002 to 2008.

They then examined the statistical relationship between fire activity in the landscape and pollution levels around the two cities, which were chosen out of 20 prospective locations nationwide for their best run of pollution data.

University of Wollongong Centre for Environmental Risk Management of Bushfires senior research fellow Owen Price says the study built on previous research which highlighted the relationship between bushfire smoke and human health impacts.

Mr Price says there is a definite connection between fire activity and pollution in urban centres but that there are separate windows of influence of fire activity on pollution.

FAQ: Do the filters need replacing, if so, how often?

Do the filters need replacing, if so, how often?

Yes the filters do need replacing.

1. The effective working life of the City filter depends on a number of factors, such as; the breathing rate of the user; ambient levels of pollution; the length of time the filter is actively working; hygiene levels. Taking these factors into account we recommend that the filter should be replaced every month or every 69 hours, whichever is sooner.

2. Replacement of the Sportsta™ filter should be carried out every month or when the filter becomes noticeably discoloured.

Delhi’s dirty picture: City’s air pollution set to get worse

Air pollution in Delhi, which has already reached alarming levels, is set to worsen after Diwali. Data taken from six places in the Capital between October 22 and November 2 show air pollution at frightening levels even before November 13.

Carbon monoxide levels were between 1.2 mg/m3 and 2.5 mg/m3 on Diwali last year, and between 0.87 mg/m3 and 9.75 mg/m3 in 2010.

The festival of lights is still 11 days away this year but the pollutant has already reached 7.3 mg/m3 in the city’s air, trapped by the blanket of smog that has enveloped the Capital.

The Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) says the levels of air pollution have already gone back to the pre-CNG days. It says ‘killer particles’ such as PM 2.5 – PM is short for particulate matter or suspended pollutants in the air such as soot, smoke, smog, dust, allergens etc – exceed the permissible level by 4-6 times at several places.

Prolonged exposure to these pollutants can cause asthma, lung diseases, chronic bronchitis, damage the heart and, in severe cases, cause lung cancer.

Shanghai: Eastday-Air to be ‘slightly polluted’ today

THE city’s air quality is likely to be slightly polluted today and tomorrow because of possible sand dust from the north and low-force winds, the Shanghai Environmental Monitoring Center said yesterday.

The center said the air quality yesterday afternoon and night were also close to the “slight pollution” mark.

Air pollution, especially PM2.5 – a gauge of airborne pollutants measuring less than 2.5 microns in diameter – was a hot topic during the two-day Pujiang Innovation Forum in Shanghai that ended yesterday.

“The PM2.5 accounts for 60 to 70 percent of fine particles in China. However, the World Health Organization has set a limit of around 50 percent for PM2.5 in developing countries,” Hao Jiming, director of the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences said at the forum yesterday morning.

Kicking up a stink over air quality

A HEATED row has broken out over Green Party calls for Reading Borough Council to act on potentially dangerous levels of air pollution.

Reading Green Party leader, Cllr Rob White, this week accused the council of failing to react to “very high” levels of a harmful pollutant, which were recorded last week at a Caversham Road monitoring station.

The pollutant, PM10, was found to be at the maximum level of 10 on the scale that air pollution levels are recorded.

Winter spurts air pollution in Delhi

Onset of cold weather in the Capital has brought its adverse side — air pollution five times higher than the national standard and worse that India’s most polluted hubs such as Kanpur in Uttar Pradesh and Ankleshwar in Gujarat.

The air pollution data available with the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) shows that the pollution levels in Delhi on Thursday was highest in 2012 with Anand Vihar recording respirable suspended particular matter (RSPM) level of 709 in per cubic meter of air (ug/m3).

The average RSPM – general measure of pollutants in air — in Delhi was 571 ug/m3 more than five times the national standard of 100 ug/m3 for the pollutant in residential areas.

The worrisome fact for health of Delhiities is that the winter RSPM levels has more than doubled in the last five years and is higher than the mid-1990s level when public transport used to run on diesel.

Till mid 2000s, busy Central and South Delhi areas were high air pollution zones. Now the dirty air has spread to even cleaner residential areas such as Rohini in north Delhi and Dwarka in west Delhi with RSPM level of more than 500 ug/m3.

“The data clearly shows that the increasing number of vehicles in the Capital is the biggest contributing factor for rising air pollution,” said Anumita Roy Choudhary of advocacy group Centre for Science and Environment.

Unlike other cities, industrial activity is restricted in Delhi and therefore, around 90 cars for every 1,000 people in the city is the prime contributor for rising pollution levels.

Winter is bad for people with heart ailments and breathing problems as the pollution remain suspended in air for long period in absence of heat for quick disbursal of the pollutants.

Bangkok: BMTA told to maintain clean buses

City transit agency found negligent, responsible for air pollution in Bangkok

The Bangkok Mass Transit Authority must ensure its 14,000 public buses are properly maintained and don’t release harmful black smoke and cause pollution, according to a recommended ruling by a Supreme Administrative Court judge responsible for a case filed by an environmental activist 10 years ago.

If the senior judge’s recommendation is followed, it will create a new standard in the fight against polluting buses – and air pollution.

Judge Sumet Roygulchareon said he had studied the case and found the BMTA was negligent in failing to reduce the harmful black fumes released from its public buses.

This was a cause of serious air pollution in the capital. According to the 1979 Land Transportation Act, the BMTA must take responsibility to control emission released by public buses, he noted.
