London has a lot on its hand when it comes to air pollution

London is facing a big uphill battle over air quality, after new research found parts of the capital have air pollution three times higher than the European-recommended safe limit.

The government recently filed plans to the European Commission to delay plans for air pollution improvements in 12 UK areas. However, the plans were rejected by the commission, who said that air quality must improve in these areas.

If nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels are not reduced by 2020 – or in the case of London, 2025 – the government is facing hefty fines from regulatory bodies in the European Union. Air pollution has been recognised by the government as being the second biggest public health threat, after smoking, with areas such as London being particularly exposed to high levels of NO2 and other harmful pollutants.

New research, conducted by scientists at King’s College London, found that areas of the capital were well above the European-recommended safe limit, with Putney and Brixton being identified as particularly polluted areas.

Brighton and Hove traffic pollution above EU limits

Pollution caused by traffic is above legal requirements in most parts of Brighton and Hove, a report has found.

The study by Brighton and Hove City Council found that 46 out of 63 locations recorded pollution levels above EU targets during 2011.

Councillors are now likely to back a drive to cut fumes and airborne particles caused mainly by vehicles, the local authority said.

The council said the city risked being fined millions under EU legislation.

Air quality advisory issued for holiday

The Clark County Department of Air Quality has issued an air quality advisory in effect today and tomorrow for potentially elevated smoke levels in some neighborhoods.

The elevated smoke levels will be caused by fireworks and outdoor barbecues. A portion of the smoke from these sources is made up of small particles and other pollutants that can be inhaled and aggravate respiratory diseases.

Pollution levels often increase on Independence Day as the evening progresses.

Suggestions include… Wear a mask…!

Limits for air pollution ‘breached across London’

Air pollution in 2011 was so high in London that EU limits were exceeded at most monitoring sites close to busy roads, according to figures released today by the London Assembly.

Research at 100 monitoring sites by King’s College London found limits for harmful Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2) were breached at the majority of locations close to roads, with the worst pollution levels – over three times the limit – measured in Putney and Brixton.

The King’s College London research also found limits for PM10 – which is linked to respiratory and cardiovascular conditions – were exceeded at two kerbside monitoring sites, three roadside sites and one industrial monitoring site.

Air pollution? Transport sector to blame

BANGALORE: A whopping 67% of emission in Bangalore is caused by the transport sector. Over the past decade, dozens of global studies have shown that spending time in close proximity to heavy traffic, especially diesel truck traffic, is associated with a wide range of morbidity effects, as well as increased mortality.Importantly, diesel exhaust particulate was declared a toxic air contaminant in 1998 and subsequently, in June 2012, World Health Organisation WHO classified diesel exhaust as carcinogenic.
