A smoke haze from fires in Indonesia continues to cause havoc in Malaysia and Singapore.

Two areas in the southern Malaysian state of Johor have declared a state of emergency after pollution levels reached 750. Conditions are considered to be hazardous to health when the figure is at 300.

The streets of towns and cities such as Kuala Lumpur, normally thronged with people, have been more quiet than normal as people stay in outdoors.

The illegal burning of forests and scrub land on the Indonesian island of Sumatra has caused air quality levels to reach dangerous levels in Singapore, however the situation did improve over the weekend.

Officials in Indonesia have attempted to shift some of the blame by suggesting that companies based in Malaysia and Singapore may be partly responsible. This has been rejected by both countries
