Mild air pollution to continue

Mild air pollution is expected to continue shrouding the capital for the next two days due to the weather, authorities said.

Low pressure and steady airflow will prevent the city’s pollution levels from decreasing. From 9 am Saturday to 9 am Sunday, the average density of PM 2.5 was 147 micrograms per cubic meter, almost twice the standard of 75 micrograms per cubic meter, according to the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Center.

Visibility on highways has also been poor.

Central Valley Air Alert set for next week

The San Joaquin Valley is fined 29 million dollars each year because ozone pollution exceeds federal standards. An Air Alert will be activated next week. Air Alerts are meant to lower pollution and end the millions in fines. Although the millions in fines return to the Valley in the form of programs that promote clean air – it’s still a financial burden. We each pay $12 on it every year at the DMV. Monitoring stations in cities all over the Valley constantly measure air pollution. They report pollutants like ozone every hour. Ozone is a good thing high in the Earth’s ozone layer but it is harmful to breathe… even at levels far below where the federal fine is concerned. The main source on the ground is exhaust.

Air quality advisory issued for dust, wildfire smoke

Due to expected smoke from wildfires burning in Southern California, and dust from the Colorado river basin, the Clark County Department of Air Quality issued a Dust/Smoke advisory. The advisory will be in effect today to Thursday morning.

Smoke is made of small dust particles and other pollutants that can aggravate respiratory diseases.

At this time, unhealthy levels of air pollution are not occurring. Air Quality officials will continue to monitor conditions and will post an alert on the forecast page of the DAQ website if unhealthy levels actually occur.

In America’s National Parks, Air Pollution Knows No Boundaries

Summer is a time when American families plan vacations. Many are centered on the natural beauty of our country and the National Parks System. However, what many tourists may not anticipate is that the destination of their journey is being impacted by air pollution in the form of soot and haze, despite laws that were put into place as far back as the 1970s.

Dhaka is named the least liveable city

Dhaka has been rated as the least liveable location among the 140 cities surveyed by the Economist Intelligence Unit.

The Global Livability Survey released yesterday found the Bangladeshi capital downgrading one step from the rank of second worst city to live in.

Last year, Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, became the least desirable destination.

Dhaka’s score, however, remains unchanged — 38.7 out of 100.

Taylor Bridge Fire impacting Spokane air quality

Smoke from the Taylor Bridge Fire has prompted air quality warnings in Spokane County. Right now Spokanes air quality index is at 71, which is just shy of whats considered unhealthy for people with respiratory problems. The good news is that the haze over Spokane isnt the result of stagnant air but from a plume of smoke from the Taylor Bridge Fire, which means the smoke will blow out of the area as soon as the wind changes direction. Mondays five acre fire near Spokane Falls Community College was just a preview of the smoke still to come. Overnight, the brown haze from the Taylor Bridge Fire in Cle Elum started to drift into the area.
