Spain – EU highest level of Natural pollutants in the air

A recent report released from EU body, the European Environment Agency (EEA), found the highest levels of natural pollutants were in Spain, which frequently experiences forest fires, most recently this month and more catastrophically in the last few days.

Out of 42 instances, where the air levels in Spain were reported above legal limits, 18 were caused by natural pollution, said the report, which is the first European study of its kind. The Observatory of Sustainability, an independent organisation in Spain, said proximity to the Sahara made the Iberian peninsula especially vulnerable.

“This will get worse by desertification caused by climate change in the peninsula, converting this topic to a very important issue in Spain,” the group said in a statement. Ten other countries – including Cyprus, Greece and Italy – also reported air pollution above legal limits because of natural particles. “This analysis shows that authorities should make extra efforts to reduce the air pollution they can control, because the cumulative effect of natural and man-made particulates can damage people’s health,” Jacqueline McGlade, EAA executive director, said in a statement.

El Niño exerts a deadly effect

An unexpected link between the climate event El Niño and a rise in the number of deaths in southeast Asia is revealed in research published today in Nature Climate Change.

El Niño events, which displace warm water into the eastern Pacific Ocean and produce cool waters near Indonesia, exert their effect by suppressing the monsoon rains that usually put a dampener on the use of fire to clear land for agriculture. The resulting additional pollution can account for as many as 15,000 deaths in El Niño years, the study says.

“We usually think of deforestation and fires in terms of global carbon emissions, but we are seeing this regional impact on public health as well,” says Miriam Marlier, a graduate student at Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory in Palisades, New York, who led the study.

Virginia ranks among 20 worst states for power plant air pollution

Virginia is the 12th worst state in the nation when it comes to exposing residents to toxic air pollution from coal-fired power plants, according to an analysis released today in Virginia by the Natural Resources Defense Council.

The NRDC-compiled data show: Virginia’s electric sector ranked 12th in industrial toxic air pollution in 2010, emitting nearly 9.5 million pounds of harmful chemicals, which accounted for 40 percent of state pollution and about 3 percent of toxic pollution from all U.S. power plants.

Virginia ranked 27th among all states in industrial mercury air pollution from power plants with about 660 pounds emitted in 2010, which accounted for 66 percent of state mercury air pollution and 1 percent of U.S. electric sector mercury pollution.

BROWN AIR: Morning pollution a pall in SB Valley

Anyone driving west on Interstate 10 from the east San Bernardino Valley this morning likely saw a thick, yellow-brown wall of air pollution lying ahead. It’s not an uncommon sight, and it’s often accompanied by a distinctive, acrid smell that can make people think twice about taking a deep breath.

Sort of dispels the expression “morning fresh.”

So what is that stuff, exactly? Sam Atwood, longtime spokesman for the South Coast Air Quality Management District, said the likely culprit is PM 2.5, microscopic particles that combine to form one of the more troublesome forms of air pollution.

Hong Kong battles to improve air quality

As Hong Kong releases its latest economic growth figures, worries are increasing that its success has been bought at the price of heavy pollution which is holding back its appeal as a place to do business.

For many Hong Kong residents, the biggest day-to-day problem is the air pollution – which ranks among the worst ever recorded.

Most of the blame is placed on the economic success of both Hong Kong and it’s neighbour China.

Utah’s wildfires polluting the air

If your eyes are watering and there’s an in itch in your throat, you can probably thank the smoke sitting in the valley.

The pollution in the air isn’t just annoying, it is potentially dangerous.

Steve Packham, the Toxicologist with the Utah Division of Air Quality said, “Smoke irritates the eyes, ears and throat.”

The junk in the air is called particulates. Our body is built to deal with them, but only to a certain point.

Ky., Tenn. among worst toxic pollution states

Kentucky is the worst state in the nation when it comes to toxic air pollution from coal-fired power plants, according to a report released Thursday by the Natural Resources Defense Council. The analysis examined emissions from power plants in 2010, the most recent data available. As for the other states bordering Kentucky, Ohio ranked 2nd, Indiana 4th, West Virginia 5th, Tennessee 11th, Virginia 12th, Missouri 15th and Illinois 16th. Delaware was No. 20 in the groups “Toxic Twenty” states. As for Kentucky, Council officials said its power plants are “poorly controlled” and that it has “failed to … adopt any kind of state law or regulation that requires substantial reduction in mercury or toxic pollution from the power sector.”

Effort set to track air pollution

The largest and most comprehensive effort to research air pollution in Britain is underway in London and the skies above it.

As many as 80 scientists from eleven universities are tracking nearly 1,000 different types of gases and particles in the atmosphere.

Pollutants are being measured on the ground, at the top of BT Tower and from a research plane circling the capital.

The project is timed to provide reams of data during the Olympic Games.

It is also intended to help improve air quality forecasting in the years ahead.

One aim is to investigate how much pollution is generated by the capital itself – principally from vehicles – and how much blows in from the industrial centres of continental Europe.

London is frequently in breach of international air quality standards set by the EU and World Health Organisation.
