London Boroughs and businesses awarded £5.4m to tackle air pollution

Boroughs and businesses throughout the capital have been awarded £5.4 million worth of funding to tackle the problem of air pollution through adopting measures such as increasing the use of low-emission vehicles, (TfL) Transport for London has announced.

The money forms part of the £20 million Air Quality Fund unveiled by the Mayor earlier this year, with a specific emphasis on supporting local efforts to tackle pollution hotspots throughout the city.

Commenting on the initiative, Mayor Boris Johnson said: “The more we work together to tackle air quality, the bigger the potential impact, and this funding will be used to make a real improvement.”

Alongside the scheme, the Mayor has also asked TfL to assess the potential of introducing the world’s first Ultra Low Emission Zone in the centre of the capital from 2020 – a move that Mr Johnson is said to believe will encourage a greater uptake of zero and low-emission vehicles.
