Beijing air quality plummets after Lantern Festival fireworks

Heavy smog blanketed most areas in Beijing and air pollution readings surged after enthusiastic residents set off fireworks to celebrate the annual Lantern Festival, Xinhua reported on Monday.

Readings of PM2.5, tiny airborne particles that can enter deep into the lungs, climbed to more than 300 micrograms per cubic metre in most areas in Beijing on Sunday night, coinciding with the last rush hours of firework displays, said the Beijing Municipal Environmental Monitoring Centre.

In certain areas, the level reached as high as 561, regarded as “severely polluted”. The World Health Organisation recommends that PM2.5 levels be kept below 25 micrograms per cubic metre.

Starting on Monday morning, no fireworks were allowed in Beijing’s downtown until the next Lunar New Year, according to safety regulations on fireworks.

Beijing authorities on Sunday issued a smog alert and called on residents to reduce the smoky celebrations and stay indoors. Experts said Sunday’s weather condition also contributed to the sudden worsening air quality. A cloudy, foggy day with little wind appeared to prevent the pollution from blowing away.

After being told to reduce firework displays, people took to the internet to complain.

“Fireworks are the straw that broke the camel’s back. What’s really behind the air pollution were vehicles and factories. Cracking down on firework displays is only an environmental protection campaign, nothing more,” one internet user said online.Beijing’s air quality has frequently made headlines in the last several months. The government has vowed to put in place more measures to combat air pollution in the capital by temporarily close down factories and restricting vehicles on roads.

China acknowledges ‘cancer villages’

China’s environment ministry appears to have acknowledged the existence of so-called “cancer villages” after years of public speculation about the impact of pollution in certain areas.

For years campaigners have said cancer rates in some villages near factories and polluted waterways has shot up.

But the term “cancer village” has no technical definition and the ministry’s report did not elaborate on it.

There have been many calls for China to be more transparent on pollution.

The latest report from the environment ministry is entitled “Guard against and control risks presented by chemicals to the environment during the 12th Five-Year period 2011-2015”.

It says that the widespread production and consumption of harmful chemicals forbidden in many developed nations are still found in China.

“The toxic chemicals have caused many environmental emergencies linked to water and air pollution,” it said.

The report goes on to acknowledge that such chemicals could pose a long-term risk to human health, making a direct link to the so-called “cancer villages”.

“There are even some serious cases of health and social problems like the emergence of cancer villages in individual regions,” it said.

FAQ: Why is the Cinqro™ mask more expensive than the other masks?

RESPRO® CINQRO™ MASK

RESPRO® CINQRO™ MASK

The Cinqro™ package incorporates a complete mask fitted with a Hepa-Type particle filter for filtering submicron particles like diesel smoke. A spare DACC chemical/particle filter is also supplied as part of the package allowing filter interchangeability.

For improved air flow and comfortability, two Powa Elite™ valves are included with the Cinqro™ mask. They improve air flow characteristics when breathing out at elevated breathing patterns. This equates to less back pressure, less dampness in the filter, improved filtration, lower inhalation resistance all of which result in improved comfort and performance.

A graphics rebuild for the look of the mask fits it squarely in the sports arena rather than the ‘scare the hell out of everyone’ arena.

Cinqro™ = mask + 2 filters + Powa Elite™ valves + graphics = value for money

Air pollutants in Woking above government target levels

Two Surrey councils have said they will be working together to improve air quality as readings showed levels of a pollutant above government targets.

Readings of nitrogen dioxide were almost 20% above the government’s national objective levels in Anchor Hill in Knaphill.

Surrey County Council and Woking Borough Council said an air quality action plan would be produced.

Woking council said the higher readings were due to pollution from vehicles.

Air quality is monitored regularly via 24 nitrogen dioxide tubes located around the borough.

Anchor Hill was found to have a reading of 47.7 micrograms per cubic metre, with the government’s objective level being 40 micrograms.

Councillor Beryl Hunwicks, from Woking Borough Council, said: “The air quality within Woking borough is monitored regularly and it’s positive that generally, the air quality in the borough is good.

“However, the reading in Anchor Hill is slightly higher than we would hope.”

The junction of Lower Guildford Road, Highclere Road and High Street, Knaphill has been declared an air quality management area.

UC Davis study says it found source of air pollutants

Researchers at University of California Davis have established, for the first time, a link between toxic substances that pollute the air and what causes them.

The research, announced Monday by the California Air Resources Board and the Electric Power Research Institute, holds the potential to better regulate sources of air pollution – an issue of great import to the a-plagued Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys.

“People have looked at direct emissions from sources – like taking things right out of tailpipes and out of other sources,” said Anthony Wexler, director of the Air Quality Research Center at UC Davis, who conducted the study with fellow UC Davis professor Kent Pinkerton.

“What distinguishes us is that we’re actually sampling right from the atmosphere in the way we breathe,” Wexler said. “Because you don’t put your mouth up against a tailpipe.”

Establishing a picture of what toxic brew is in the atmosphere and what sources it originates from, plus how those chemicals react, is key to fine-tuning environmental regulation, as well as the costs borne from it, said Will Barrett, policy manager with the American Lung Society.

“The findings are significant in that they underscore the importance of controls on things like wood burning and transportation sources of the most harmful particles that affect the Valley,” said Barrett.

High levels of air pollution found in Northern Ireland

High levels of air pollution have been detected in Northern Ireland, the Department of the Environment said.

The Newry area has recorded the highest pollution, with moderate levels noted in Armagh, Ballymena, Belfast, Lisburn, North Down and Londonderry.

The problem has been linked with the build-up of emissions from vehicles and home heating during the current calm, cold weather conditions in the region.

With weather set to remain similar through the rest of this week, officials said there was a possibility that high or very high levels of pollution could be recorded in urban centres across Northern Ireland.

The department said during periods of high air pollution the symptoms of people with lung or heart disease could worsen but healthy people were unlikely to experience any ill effects.

UK air quality data ‘more robust’ than in Europe

Report suggests the approach used by the UK to compile air quality data may be resulting in greater numbers of EU air pollution exceedances in comparison to other European countries

The approach used to measure levels of nitrogen dioxide in the UK may have resulted in a larger number of areas in the country exceeding EU air pollution limits than in other European countries, according to a Defra report published last week (February 15).

However, the report concludes that the UK’s approach potentially provides a more detailed analysis of air pollution data for EU compliance assessment compared to other member states.

Currently the UK supplements measured data with modelled predictions for its EU compliance assessments, which is the equivalent to monitoring everywhere across the UK.

Measured air quality is based on actual readings at monitoring sites, whereas modelling uses various mathematical and scientific methods to calculate concentrations. Modelling is used to estimate pollution levels from specific sources or in areas that do not have monitoring sites, for example.

Only the UK and Netherlands currently submit modelling data alongside monitoring data to the EU, while other large countries such as France and Germany only submit measured data.
